Education should address sociopolitical issues that affect the educational context, allowing students to use mathematics and other knowledge to understand and act on their reality, critically and collaboratively. Therefore, it is necessary to have educational proposals that allow students to develop these competencies. The objective of this work is to understand the perception of high school students, participants in a work project, regarding the relevance of the problem, pedagogical strategy, mathematical learning, and the skills of writing and reading the world with mathematics. The qualitative, exploratory research, approved by the ethics committee, included 25 third-year high school students - 15 composed the analysis corpus. The data collection instrument was an online questionnaire, subjected to thematic content analysis, with predefined categories. The results indicate that the teaching strategy is interesting and capable of assigning practical meanings to theoretical content, although it is complex. Despite indicating the importance of addressing real problems, some students do not feel capable of dealing with new problems using mathematics. However, they identified interdisciplinarities, attributing importance to mathematics, to modeling, and gaining confidence to manipulate these tools. The analysis outlined possibilities and limitations regarding the use of this non-traditional teaching strategy. The practical application of the content and the approach to real problems contributed to the critical formation of the students. However, such proposals should be more frequent throughout Basic Education so that students change their view of mathematics and the social role of the school.
