Engenheiros do Futuro: o perfil dos estudantes de engenharia a distância no Rio Grande do Sul

The study investigated the profile of students enrolled in Engineering programs at a distance education university in Porto Alegre, Brazil, covering classes from the first to the tenth semester. Quantitative and descriptive in nature, the research provided an overview of students’ socioeconomic, cultural, academic, and school characteristics, as well as their impressions, professional expectations, and quality of life. The results highlighted the importance of engineering education aligned with industry and societal demands, aiming to train competent, ethical, and socially responsible professionals. Essential skills such as critical thinking, creativity, ethics, commitment to safety and the environment, problem-solving, and teamwork were emphasized. The study also examined faculty availability, the adequacy of teaching methods and technological resources, and the impact of the pandemic on studies. Findings revealed that family income, financial responsibilities, and workload significantly influence academic experiences, offering insights for more effective educational strategies aligned with current engineering training needs.
