Speakers animals: approaches between Guimarães Rosa and Aquilino Ribeiro

Abstract

Although they lived in different contexts, João Guimarães Rosa (1908-1967) and Aquilino Ribeiro (1885-1963) can be approximated by certain contact points noticeable in their works when we examine them with close attention. From a look taken on the style of both authors, analogies and discrepancies are seen at the same time on some of their narratives. Both authors worked authentically with regionalism, language and imagination. In this sense, this study aims at contributing to expand, even minimally, the dialogue between the works of the aforementioned writers, pointing out their similarities and differences. To do this, two tales were put in confrontation, that is, "À hora de vésperas", published by Jardim das tormentas (1913), the debut work of the Portuguese writer, and “Conversa de bois”, published by Sagarana (1946), which was the first book of short stories by the Brazilian writer. First we touched on the question of regionalism and analyzed both narratives focusing on the protagonist role witch is played, in certain moments, by the animals of the two stories. We understand that this role is manifested, in particular, by the use of personification and the dialogues which animals have among themselves.
