Look how the cities of public education of children: contributions from a case study in Lisbon

This article builds on a perspective at educational politics from the point of view of everyday experiences made possible in schools and cities. Instead of analyzing the normative documents, favoring a top-down approach, the perspective adopted here departs from the analysis of an empirical case to rethink and reconceptualize political trends. Assuming that education is a form of intervention in the world the paper sheds light on singular practices that allow opening possibilities for children’s education through experiences of relation with city life. With this purpose, the article is organized into three main parts. The first introduces the conceptual framework by the debate of the public space of education. The second frames the methodology followed in the case study and tells of the main features of the case studied – the case of a 3 rd grade class in a public primary school in central Lisbon. The third part presents a conceptual framework to look at cities as public spaces for the education of children.Downloads
