The implementation of audiodescription in Brazil

Abstract

The text organizes in a special way, two interviews with pioneers and distinguished audiodescription’s professionals in Brazil. Audiodescription was introduced in Brazil in the early 2000s and in the last twenty years, it has spread and been officially recognized. In the first part of the text, the authors, as academic researchers of audio description, interview Paulo Romeu, a person determined and committed to the issues of social inclusion, and who, with his courage and impulsiveness, had an effective participation in the construction of Law 10.098 (known as accessibility law), which describes the emergence in Brazil of mandatory audiodescription as an accessibility resource. The second part of the text presents an interview with Lívia Motta, one of the first audiodescriptors in Brazil, with incessant performance in the use of this accessibility resource in the most different fields, such as official events, films, advertisement in TV, theater, concerts, operas, dance and circus shows, stand ups, musicals, religious events, weddings, births and others. The interviewee is also the trainer of many other renowned Brazilian audiodescriptors and, in her interview, she points out the main strategies for the practical development of this resource.
