Cidade de Palaguin, Pasárgada, or the two sides of the same dissatisfaction with reality

Abstract

This essay discusses through a comparative lenses the works of Carlos Eurico da Costa (A Cidade de Palagüin) and Manuel Bandeira (“Vou-me embora pra Pasárgada” and “Saudades do Rio Antigo”). Considering that Bandeira’s poems were influential among Portuguese artists in the 1950s, and that Palagüin is usually read as a reference to The Songs of Maldoror, I argue for a unique Portuguese “surrealist lineage” with roots that surpass the French surrealist manifestos. This lineage is related to Portugal’s inner culture, in which Brazilian Modernism is also present. Together with the Orpheu generation, Brazilian modernists can be considered a “close relative” or another support system for Portuguese artists. Eurico da Costa’s poem is key to this argument of an encounter, as well as confrontation, with what the French surrealists — or André Breton himself — proposed, outlining Surrealism in Portugal with an accent.
