An analysis of the role of indigenous women in defending the environment from the perspective of the environmentalism of the poor

Abstract

This article seeks to address the role of Indigenous women in the context of the necessary defense of the environment in the face of increasingly intense pressures on their territories. It aims to reflect on the consequences of a world where nature is treated as a mere resource, disregarding life forms that perceive it differently. Given this, the following research problem arises: considering the premises of the Environmentalism of the Poor, how do Indigenous women act in environmental defense and what is their role in this mission? To answer the research problem, the deductive method will be used, starting from a general approach on how Law protects the environment, moving through the theory of the Environmentalism of the Poor, and culminating in an analysis of how these elements can be important for thinking about the role of Indigenous women in the struggle for the preservation of socio-environmental rights in Brazil and Latin America.
