Between thickets and roads: malunguinho and the reconstruction of human rights in the light of jurema epistemologies

The aim of this study is to analyze, based on the description of the worldview of the Sacred Jurema, an Afro-Amerindian religion typical of Northeastern Brazil, and the historical trajectory of Malunguinho—who, during his lifetime, stood out as a leader of the Catucá Quilombo, the most important center of resistance to slavery in the state of Pernambuco—the possible contributions to the enrichment of the theory and practice of human rights, which are still strongly marked by a colonialist legacy. To this end, the study draws on the theoretical contributions of decoloniality and interculturality, ultimately concluding that the Sacred Jurema and the historical and divine trajectory of Malunguinho can provide important foundations for the (re)construction of human rights from a perspective centered on solidarity and on the recognition of cultural diversity as fundamental principles for a more effective protection of human dignity and nature.
