Light, camera, and segregation: the culture of control and the detecta system

Abstract

This study examines transformations in insecurity and social control practices, with an emphasis on the influence of surveillance technologies on crime management and public security policies. It is based on the problem of how the incorporation of these technologies contributes to the reproduction of social inequalities and practices of segregation. The objective is to critically analyze the intersection between surveillance, security discourses, and punitive policies, investigating how these elements shape new forms of social control. It is argued that the expansion of these systems reflects shifts in power dynamics and may intensify the criminalization of marginalized groups. The research adopts a qualitative approach, developed through a literature review, combined with the analysis of the Detecta system as a case study. It concludes that the use of these technologies may reinforce discriminatory dynamics and expand mechanisms of social exclusion.
