Cooperation and conflict in international relations: the case of South Africa and Israel, 1970-2024

Abstract

This article analyzes the relations between South Africa and Israel from 1970 to 2024. Based on primary and secondary sources, we argue that, while during the Cold War the similarities regarding the international and regional insertion strategies by Tel Aviv and Pretoria were conducive to their cooperation; in the post-East-West dispute, while Israel maintained its foreign policy without major transformations, South Africa underwent significant changes, most notably regarding its interest for themes and agendas pertaining to the Global South. These conditions led to distance and conflict between the parties. Such argument is structured in two different moments, with each analytical section dedicated to understanding the transformations between South Africa and Israel, respectively, during the Cold War and afterwards.
