Reading International In/Security in dissonant places: racialized imaginaries in everyday life in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro

This article explores the dynamics of in/security in the field of International In/Security Studies from an analytical perspective sensitive to the multiple networks of relationships, agents, practices and objects that constitute discourses of racial alterity and inform processes of racialization. To this end, based on a literature review of secondary sources, we carried out a critical review of classic and critical In/Security Studies, in order to both highlight their racialized assumptions and offer more complex ways of observing how in/ security practices emerge through everyday relations. In a second moment, we built an analysis of racial in/ security based on notions of race as a sliding signifier, of the ambivalence in racial and gender discourses and the complexification of manifestations of violence based on simultaneous relations of proximity and distance. From this, we analyze the dynamics of revitalization and pacification in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro, to highlight the ambiguities of in/security in everyday life. Bringing the experiences of travesti women in Lapa into this context, we demonstrate both the racialized imaginary subscribed to the manifestations of violence suffered by them and the ambiguities of feeling in/secure in this space.
