as a science, pointing out its contemporary development trends. Based on the given discussion, we intend to investigate how the knowledge developed in such area can support the investigations focused on language teaching/learning context that seek to contemplate the political and ideological developments arising from the current global organization. At the fi nal segment of this paper, we give att ention to the many challenges and paradigm shift s that focus specifi cally on English as a lingua franca teaching and its implications with regard to the intercultural perspective of teaching. Therefore, authors such as Moita Lopes (1996, 2006, 2009), Celani (1998), Rajagopalan (2003, 2004, 2006), Kumaravadivelu (2006), Jenkins (2007), Seidlhofer (2011), Mendes (2007, 2008), among others, will support the discussion.
