COMPOSITION AND FORMATION OF THE PROVISIONAL JUNTAS IN THE CAPTAINCY OF BAHIA - 1549 - 1763

The present article aims to analyze the composition of the juntas governativas, or provisional government, in the captaincy of Bahia during the colonial period. The question here is how were they constituted? Who were their members? What were their attributions? The provisional governments were responsible for the administration of the captaincy in the absence of the governor, either because the office was vacant or because the governor had to step aside. We used documents from the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, present in the Projeto Resgate Barão do Rio Branco, as well as a theoretical and bibliographical discussion on government and its characteristics in the Kingdom of Portugal during the so-called first Modernity. The analysis of the actions and characteristics of the provisional regime tends to indicate a better understanding of the dynamics of power, laws, politics and society in the Bahia captaincy during the colonial period.
