Abstract

Chemicals are essential for human and animal life, as they are present in the cure and prevention of diseases and even in increasing agricultural productivity. Their indiscriminate and often excessive use causes frequent environmental and public health problems. Only 0.025% of the 12 million known chemical products are responsible for most poisonings. Another serious problem diagnosed by the World Health Organization is the underreporting of poisoning cases. Toxicology is not part of the Nursing curriculum, and when it is, it has a generalized and superficial approach. This hinders the training in toxicological care of these health professionals, in addition to minimizing the importance of reporting poisoning cases. Because of this, nurses lack training in the most frequent and most serious poisonings. In view of this, this work, which comes from an extension project, aims to estimate the prevalence of notifications of poisonings registered at the Epidemiological Surveillance Center of the Municipality of Ceres-GO and to alert health professionals about the importance of training in the face of poisonings in Emergency Units, especially in the correct completion of notification forms, due to their importance for studies such as this.
