Abstract

This work investigated how Black diasporic dances, exemplified by the Silvestre Technique, articulate cultural hybridity and agency, elements that intertwine in practices of political resistance and identity formation. To explore this articulation, the research was based on theoretical concepts from authors such as Homi K. Bhabha, Stuart Hall, Leda Maria Martins, Patricia Hill Collins, and Paul Gilroy, whose approaches to the 'third space', 'crossroads', 'cultural hybridity', 'agency', and 'double consciousness' guided the analysis. According to Hall, black diasporic practices renegotiate cultural influences to reconstruct identities, a process that connects with the agency of subjects, as highlighted by Collins. Martins, in turn, centers the body as the space of living memories, where these influences are transformed into new narratives and forms of resistance. The objective was to understand bodily practices as spaces of contestation and identity formation in the diaspora, focusing on the relationship between body, memory, and multiculturalism, as well as exploring how cultural hybridity can be a strategy of resistance and self-determination. The research, which combined bibliographical review and participant observation, allowed the investigation of how the Silvestre Technique re-signifies external influences, creating counter-hegemonic epistemologies. The results indicated that, by integrating diverse cultural elements, the Silvestre Technique exemplifies cultural hybridity as a practice of resistance and self-definition. It is concluded that practices such as the Silvestre Technique transcend artistic expression, becoming instruments of cultural and political transformation, and highlighting diasporic dance as a key territory for resistance and the reconfiguration of Black identities in the diaspora.
