Abstract

This study evaluated the replacement of oat over corn in silver catfish diets supplemented with phytase over growth, body composition, and gut morphology. 168 silver catfish juveniles with average weight and length of 4.51 ± 0.59 g and 8.11 ± 0.54 cm, respectively, were randomly distributed in 24 experimental units. The experiment consisted in a 4x2 factorial array in triplicate. The first factor was increasing oat replacement levels 0, 33, 66 and 100% over corn. The second factor was the inclusion of phytase (0 and 1500 Uf Kg-1 ) or not. There was interaction between factors for weight gain and specific growth rate, fish fed with 66% replacement of oat over corn with phytase supplementation resulted in highest growth. In body composition, the moisture was lowest in fish fed with 100% oat replacement over corn without phytase supplementation. There was an ingredient influence over body crude protein, fish fed with diets containing 100% oat replacement over corn resulted in highest body protein values. Fish fed phytase enzyme supplementation presented higher body lipid composition. The tested diet has no significant effect over silver catfish gut morphology. The silver catfish diet supplementation with phytase had no effect over growth performance and gut morphology. The exception was 33% oat replacement over corn with phytase supplementation and 66% oat replacement over corn without phytase supplementation, the oat can be used without impairing fish growth, body composition and gut morphology. Likewise, the 66% oat replacement over corn with phytase resulted in the highest growth.
