Jogos políticos por índios e mercês: as negociações da Câmara Municipal de São Paulo no século XVII

O artigo apresenta as estratégias adotadas pelos moradores paulistas que, por meio de sua Câmara, lograram afirmar seus interesses políticos e econômicos. Destacaremos dois momentos do séculos XVII em que os camaristas souberam habilmente se relacionar com as distintas instâncias de autoridade da colônia, de modo a conseguir escravizar os índios e receber mercês régias. Inicialmente, durante as invasões holandesas, os paulistas foram convocados a irem a socorro da Bahia e de Pernambuco, contudo, para que tal ajuda fosse prestada, foram agraciados com honrarias. Posteriormente, veremos que o período de intensa instabilidade na vila, causada pela ruptura da elite local, coincidiu com outro período de ameaça à ordem colonial: as guerras dos bárbaros no nordeste. Novamente, os paulistas foram requisitados para defesa, mas para isso tiveram que ter seus interesses atendidos.Downloads
