Social Impact, Graduate Program in GeographyAbstract
This article presents and analyzes actions developed by the Graduate Program in Geography at the State University of Ceará (ProPGeo/UECE), taking as reference the notion of social impact of graduate education in Geography in Brazil. The main objective is to discuss the dimensions that structure the program’s activities, emphasizing the articulation between academic training, knowledge production, and social commitment. The study is based on the understanding that social impact results from the integration of scientific excellence and the capacity to promote concrete transformations in educational, social, economic, cultural, and technological fields. In this context, ProPGeo’s academic and technological production—expressed through theses, dissertations, articles, books, technical reports, and social technologies—directly engages with socially relevant issues, influencing public policies, territorial planning, education, and the dissemination of critical knowledge. The article also highlights how the impact is materialized through the qualified engagement of faculty members, students, and alumni in activities that extend beyond academia, including participation in public policies, extension projects, multidisciplinary committees, and cooperation with civil society organizations. Methodologically, the paper organizes the program’s trajectory, theoretical-methodological foundations, and strategies of social engagement, emphasizing experiences of knowledge co-production and interaction with traditional peoples and communities. Finally, the challenges and perspectives guiding the consolidation of ProPGeo/UECE are discussed, underscoring its role in strengthening a critical, socially committed Geography oriented toward territorial sustainability.
