The Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (PPGG/UFRJ), established in 1972, has established itself as a unique space within the national graduate studies landscape, characterized by the principle of “unity in diversity. Unlike programs structured around a dominant epistemological framework, PPGG/UFRJ was born from the plurality of its faculty's academic backgrounds and from the coexistence of different traditions within Geography. This article analyses the historical trajectory, institutional profile, and the social, scientific, and cultural impacts of PPGG/UFRJ. It examines how the program's impacts extend beyond the academic sphere, manifesting in contributions to public policies, engagement with traditional communities and social movements, the training of basic and higher education teachers, the development of social and environmental technologies, and leadership in debates on issues fundamental to Brazilian society. Its trajectory demonstrates the vitality of a collective project in which diversity is transformed into disciplinary unity, social relevance, and academic excellence.
