Recovery works in areas at risk to voçorocamento in Manaus (AM): characterization and limitations

Between 2005 and 2022, 42 works to restore areas at risk of gullying were carried out by the Government, distributed in two major periods: between 2005-2011, by the State Government exclusively in the eastern zone; and, between 2020 and 2022, carried out by the City of Manaus, predominantly in the northern zone. The systematic omission of the State became evident, which acts only when ordered by court order and/or when the impacts of the gullying are of great proportions in which the “risk area” incorporates/destroys urban equipment. As for the limitations, the construction defects, the reactivation of previously recovered features and the irregular occupation in recovered areas stand out. Therefore, the need for integrated urban-environmental programs becomes clear, given that the problems generated by risk areas go beyond the mere stability of slopes and/or containment of erosion features, in order to achieve the most precious incalculable asset (the lives of residents) and the most desired calculable asset (owning a home).
