Abstract

Environmental education can be a highly successful alternative when applied in schools through projects such as school gardens. The objective of this study was to promote environmental and nutritional education, as well as to awaken social values through the school garden in students in the first and second grades of elementary school at the Geraldino Neves Corrêa Municipal School, in the Picadinha district, Dourados-MS. The action took place in the months of April, May and June 2013, with weekly meetings involving awareness-raising activities, such as informal conversations, and practical activities, such as creating flowerbeds and sowing seeds in them, all with the direct participation of the children. The vegetables planted, in addition to meeting the students' requests, were also intended to meet the school's needs. The proposal for the garden was accepted with great enthusiasm by the children. Thus, by helping to maintain the garden, it was clear that they were happy to do something that would be good for the school and for themselves. It can be said that there was indeed an interaction between the staff, teachers and students, and that the students began to develop social responsibilities. It can be concluded that the students became able to understand the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, and it was also possible to awaken social values in the students.
