Abstract

The central hypothesis of this work is that China's rise in the global value chains (GVC´s) of the world of soccer is a dependent variable (resultant) of the following two independent variables: i) it follows the general pattern of the country's international economic insertion, which presents notable indicators of value added and the strengthening of national brands with strong government support; and ii) this process is part of a state project that aims to use soccer as a tool of soft power at the international level. By analyzing the correlation between these processes, the final part of the article is dedicated to point out the challenges and possibilities for the development of soccer in China in the long run.
