Abstract

This article examines the economic debate surrounding regional integration by comparing and analyzing the evolution and commercial outcomes associated with the creation of MERCOSUR and the Pacific Alliance. Its aim is to understand how the member countries of these blocs have sought to promote their development through international trade. The use of the comparative method is justified by the need to establish evaluative parameters for integration processes. In this way, it becomes possible to identify indications of future trends in light of the fluctuations observed in the international economic system. The increase in trade within both blocs is evident, suggesting overall gains for the participants despite the region’s characteristic instabilities. The findings indicate greater ease and a more significant expansion of external trade within the Pacific Alliance. Nonetheless, the differing conceptions of integration reveal that this perception should be qualified, as the integration objectives of the two blocs differ substantially.
