Contemporary international migration from the perspective of borders in the European context: between walls and practices

Abstract

he general objective of this research is to identify how the frontierization of international migrations in the European context affects the rejection of immigrants. To this end, an analytical approach is adopted, based on a bibliographic and documentary review, using a deductive method and an interdisciplinary perspective. The specific objectives consist of: presenting a historical overview of migrations in the European context; analyzing the practice of frontierization as an expression of a contemporary anti-migration policy, highlighting some socio-geographical contexts where such practice has been implemented; and identifying rhetorics that foster the geopolitics of frontierization. The results indicate that the practice of borderization contributes to the stigmatization, vulnerability and selectivity in the reception of migrants and refugees. The theme is justified when we consider the migratory phenomenon and its resistance as a persistent reality in European societies, thus challenging global and regional governance in conducting migration management consistent with the human condition of the immigrant. It is concluded that the practice of borderization in the European context, instead of guaranteeing the security and internal cohesion of States, reaffirms logics of segregation, violates fundamental rights, demarcates that access to certain countries is selective and contradicts hospitality.
