Anti-vaccine Denialism and Alignment in the Speeches of Malafaia and Bolsonaro Facing the COVID-19 Pandemic in Brazil

This paper assumes that denialist speeches by religious leaders are in line with the postures of the Bolsonaro administration. Amid political conservatism, these speech acts represent a relevant factor in Brazil's anti-vaccine movement and vaccine hesitancy. Therefore, this is a case study, with the objective of critically analyzing Silas Malafaia's speeches and his narrative agreement with Bolsonaro. To this end, three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Textually Oriented Discourse Analysis (ADTO), theorized by Fairclough were used. The discursive events analyzed are from the year 2021. Nevertheless, the historical formation of the concept of “religion” and its relationship with the modern State are contextualized. Also, the Brazilian pandemic context and denialism are explained. It is concluded that there was an alignment between the speeches of Malafaia and Bolsonaro in the opposite direction to the guidelines of the international scientific community. Furthermore, the narratives point to the construction of a collective identity based on religious nationalism. In addition, Fairclough's reflections and tools are relevant for a less diffuse understanding of social phenomena, in addition to highlighting power relations that may be subliminally present in hegemonic discourses.
