Our Waste Land: The Crisis of the West in 1922 and 2022

In December 1922, T.S. Eliot (1888–1965) released his most popular and influential work: The Waste Land. The author evokes images of an infertile world, torn apart by the First World War (1914-1918), whose possibility of metaphysical, ethical, intellectual, affective, and social rehabilitation is put into question. It is a portrait of a world in which the optimism preceding the Great War gave way to disorientation, loss of meaning, broken images, and inability to connect with others. If one can argue that The Waste Land is a book about the crisis of Western consciousness after the First World War, especially the Anglo-American consciousness, one can also argue that it is a work about the Western crisis contemporary with the author, including its subjective impressions. In the centenary of T.S. Eliot's work, this writing aims to explore some potentially meaningful approximations between this and that time, both characterized by what can be called a “crisis of the West”.
