Abstract

This work presents, analyzes and discusses, from a postcolonial feminist lens, the role of Palestinian women within the main organizations that make up the Palestinian national liberation movement. It works with the hypothesis that although this movement is unique (i.e. it aims at the same end), there are different interpretations on how the “national question” could be resolved. Therefore, the women who join these different organizations reflect these differences, influencing the way Fatah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and the Islamic Movement in Israel (IMI) act to achieve their goals and having their agendas, at the same time, influenced by the different agendas of these very organizations. Although the specific objective of this paper is to analyze the actions of Palestinian women within these four main organizations, it also has the more general goal of situating these women’s actions in the academic debate on Muslim female agency.
