Al Jazeera como instrumento de proyección internacional de Qatar: un análisis de la cobertura de la guerra de Siria

Resumen

La transición política ocurrida en 1995 en Qatar representó un cambio en su política exterior, en busca de una mayor proyección internacional. Entre las medidas adoptadas para lograr este fin estuvo la creación de Al Jazeera, una emisora dirigida a audiencias de otros países que transmite en árabe e inglés. Este artículo analiza la relación entre la cobertura de la emisora y la política exterior del país que la financia, a partir de reportajes sobre la Guerra de Siria, a partir de la lectura de Gramsci propuesta por Robert Cox, quien considera las ideas y los valores como elementos de poder, así como capacidades
materiales. El método de análisis textual es mixto, con elementos de Análisis del Discurso y Análisis de Contenido. El corpus analizado (noticias publicadas por Al Jazeera en inglés) presenta un predominio de fuentes alineadas con la posición de Qatar sobre la guerra y la expresión de valores que subyacen al orden mundial, como los derechos humanos y el papel de liderazgo de Estados Unidos. La cadena de televisión defiende la visión política de la monarquía qatarí de insertarse en el orden actual en lugar de
cuestionarlo, aunque sus representantes no sean actores presentes en las noticias.
