Japan’s National Security Strategy between 2013 and 2022
a turning point for the Japanese international security?

Regarding the creation of the National Security Strategy (NSS) of Japan in 2013, it was attempted to observe the impacts of this strategy on the country’s international security until 2022. The research problem, therefore, concerns whether or not the NSS represents a turning point for the international security of Japan. Despite the fact that it is a pioneering document for Japan, taking into account it was the first time in its history that such guidelines were officially written, the article hypothesis addresses how the NSS does not represent a turning point for the Japanese security. Considering that the ultimate goal of the NSS is to secure the peace and stability of Japan and the international community, the high level of threats still existing against Japan in East Asia does not make the NSS a turning point for Japanese security. Furthermore, the article is divided into three sections, exploring, respectively, the evolution of Japan’s security policies, especially in the last two decades, the NSS influence over the white papers of the country and its foreign policy, and, lastly, the Japanese performance in face of the application of its NSS.
