A Al Jazeera como instrumento de projeção internacional do Catar: uma análise da cobertura da Guerra da Síria

Resumo

A transição política ocorrida em 1995 no Catar representou uma reorientação na política externa, em busca de maior projeção internacional. Uma das medidas adotadas para atingir este fim foi a criação da Al Jazeera, emissora direcionada ao público de outros países, transmitindo em árabe e inglês. Este artigo discute a relação entre a cobertura da emissora e a política externa do país que a financia, a partir de reportagens sobre a Guerra da Síria, embasando-se na leitura de Gramsci proposta por Robert Cox, que considera ideias e valores como elemento de poder, assim como capacidades materiais. O método de análise foi a Análise de Discurso, na vertente francesa de Michael Pêcheux. O corpus analisado (notícias publicadas pela Al Jazeera em 2012, 2015 e 2017) mostra uma prevalência de fontes alinhadas ao posicionamento do Catar sobre a guerra e expressão de valores consensuais na ordem mundial liberal, como direitos humanos e o papel de liderança dos EUA. A emissora de TV defende a visão política da monarquia catari, de inserir-se na ordem vigente mais do que+ questioná-la, ainda que seus representantes não sejam atores presentes nas notícias.
