Resumo

Neste artigo central para perspectivas críticas das Relações Internacionais, Rob Walker discute as possibilidades e limites surgidos das tentativas de analisar movimentos sociais em relação à política mundial. Os movimentos sociais são frequentemente considerados pouco importantes para as Relações Internacionais, sendo geralmente relegados ao âmbito político doméstico. Walker evidencia o predomínio, na imaginação política moderna, de epistemologias universalizantes e baseadas na transcendência, por um lado, e fortemente enraizadas na experiência política do Estado soberano moderno, por outro. Através da análise de um movimento social indiano, o autor aponta para a real pluralidade e mobilidade  de imaginações e práticas políticas existentes em movimentos sociais de diferentes localidades, enfatizando epistemologias de imanência que encontram tensões com leituras tradicionais e universalizantes de como os movimentos sociais se relacionam às dimensões internacionais da política. Walker discute tentativas de incorporar seriamente os movimentos sociais em análises da política mundial, ressaltando os limites de tais tentativas, como a ultra generalização de explicações estruturalistas e a permanência de uma perspectiva estatista, embasada no âmbito político doméstico, em concepções como as da sociedade civil global.
