Abstract

The main objective of the article is to foster the debate on April 19, based on reflections on the institution of the “Indian Day” in the Americas and, particularly, in Brazil. Therefore, in addition to proposing a theoretical debate of a historical nature, it makes use of the results of academic works that verified how the indigenous theme has been treated on the "school floor", especially in relation to the commemorative date, in a period related to a decade (2008-2018). Considerations are also made about advances regarding the possibilities of celebrating indigenous diversities in Brazilian schools, articulating them to the Teaching of History. As a conclusion, we propose the “reinvention” of the date, still located today, more than ten years after the enactment of Law No. 11.645/ 2008, between folklore/exoticism and commemoration/festivity, both alien to history and indigenous cultures.
