Abstract

This article addresses the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States and their representation as a new milestone that shook the nation. Cinema has a significant importance in the history of the United States, constantly studied as a way of understanding the historical processes and events that involve this country. Therefore, we sought to understand, through film language, how the September 11 attacks were understood and represented, and how they were received by American film critics. We understand that it is essential to understand the reception process that involves film productions, in order to note their dialogue with society and the different interpretations and meanings. To this end, based on the methodological perspectives of Reception Aesthetics, an analysis was carried out of the reviews of the films United 93 (2006) and World Trade Center (2006) in order to understand the construction of meanings in the face of the September 11 attacks and in the support of the War on Terror, in such a way as to problematize the historical dimension of terrorism and the actions of the USA.
