Goodbye, Ceasant: property exhaustion and land concentration in Paraná

Abstract

This is an exploratory work aimed at discussing the growth curve of the decrease in the number of agricultural properties in the state of Paraná. Based on data from the last three agricultural censuses and commercial values extracted from the Department of Agriculture and Supply of Paraná, as well as various other quantitative sources regarding related or distant variables, which are complemented by an in-depth historical material analysis based on an extensive bibliography. It starts from the unavoidable statement, as proven in the lines below, that access to agricultural property is verging on a mythical character, given the increase in land value outpacing the rise in the population's income. The concentration of land emerges as a global phenomenon, which begins to affect even countries of the highest degree of development in Western Europe. Here, we bring forth the peculiarities of the Brazilian case, especially regarding the processes directly impacting the Paraná state government. We spatialize such concentration within the state and sample the increasing enclosure of any possibility other than living in urban periphery.
