Discapacidad y género en la historia de la exploración geográfica: comprender a Isabella Bird Bishop como geógrafa discapacitada

El estudio de la vida y los viajes de la exploradora victoriana Isabella Bird Bishop ofrece importantes conocimientos sobre la historia de las personas con discapacidad en la disciplina de la geografía. Bird Bishop es una figura importante en la historia de la disciplina de la geografía, ya que fue una de las primeras mujeres admitidas en la Royal Geographical Society en 1892. También padecía una enfermedad de la columna vertebral de larga duración que se entremezclaba con síntomas psicológicos. Al estudiar cómo su discapacidad (y la comprensión contemporánea de su cuerpo) dio forma a sus viajes, este artículo muestra cómo la discapacidad interactuó con la identidad racial y de género de Bird Bishop para determinar dónde y cómo viajaba y cómo escribía sobre sus experiencias.
