Abstract

Durante a fase de exploração do século 19 a oceanografia se encontrava firmemente enraizada na geografia. Com o aumento da necessidade de estudos mais detalhados e quantitativos a oceanografia teve que se especializar e subdividir nas suas diferentes especialidades, enquanto a geografia passou a dirigir seu foco mais sobre as terras emersas, de elevado interesse econômico e geopolítico. A partir das primeiras décadas do século 20, as duas ciências passaram a trilhar caminhos distintos, sem que a geografia tivesse abandonado completamente sue interesse pelo mar. Na segunda metade do século 20 ocorreu um retorno dos estudos geográficos sobre os oceanos, na forma de uma geografia marinha, com metodologia própria e apoiada num arcabouço epistemológico de síntese e integração da geografia, com um objetivo maior de contribuir para um uso sustentável dos recursos do mar e um desenvolvimento econômico integrado do espaço costeiro e marinho.
