Abstract

The article discusses the social impact of the Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Rio Grande (PPGGeo/FURG) through the analysis of three distinct and complementary experiences: the project Life, Voice, and Color of the Subjects of Artisanal Fishing in the Patos Lagoon (VVC), the Protocol of Prior, Free, and Informed Consultation, and the Committee for Monitoring and Forecasting Extreme Events. These initiatives express different dimensions of the inseparability between teaching, research, and outreach, showing how the public university can act in valuing traditional identities, producing instruments of territorial justice, and communicating scientific knowledge to society. The results demonstrate that the social impact of graduate education goes beyond quantitative indicators, consolidating itself as a practice of resistance, dialogue, and territorial transformation.

Author Biographies

Juliana Cristina Franz, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG)

Adjunct Professor of the Undergraduate and Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Geography and Permanent Professor in the Master’s Graduate Program in Geography at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG). She is currently the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Geography at FURG. She holds a PhD in Geography from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), a Master’s degree in Geography from the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPEL), and Bachelor’s and Teaching degrees in Geography from the same institution (2013). She is the leader of the Research Group Núcleo de Análises Urbanas e Culturais (Center for Urban and Cultural Analyses) at FURG and a member of the Agrarian Studies Network (REA – UNESP-Rio Claro-SP; LEAA-Pelotas-RS; UNIFAL-Alfenas-MG; UNIMONTES-Montes Claros-MG; UFS-São Cristóvão-SE). Her research is focused on Cultural Geography, with an emphasis on cultural manifestations, identity, the multifunctionality of family farming, and food.

Eder Leandro Bayer Maier, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG)

He holds a degree in Geography from the Federal University of Rio Grande (2006), a master’s degree in Geography from the same institution (2009), and a PhD in Geography from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2014). He is currently a professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande. He completed a doctoral internship abroad in Buenos Aires, at the Argentine Navy. His research experience lies primarily in Physical Geography, with an emphasis on Climatology, focusing on the spatial and temporal distribution of precipitation in South America and its relationships with paleoclimatic data. In addition, he has experience in the use of digital cartography, GIS, and Remote Sensing applied to geography education and scientific research.

Cristiano Quaresma de Paula, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG)

Adjunct Professor of the Undergraduate and Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Geography and of the Graduate Program in Geography at the Institute of Human and Information Sciences, Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG). He holds a postdoctoral degree in Geography from the Federal University of Pará (2020), a PhD in Geography from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2018), a Master’s in Geography from the same institution (2013), and a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from FURG (2010). His research focuses on understanding artisanal fishing communities and social movements in Brazil. He is the coordinator of (R)EAT – the Teaching, Research and Extension Center for Environmental and Territorial (R)Existences – and a member of the Network of Geographies of Fishing.
