Abstract

Residential mobility is a relevant and growing phenomenon in urban and metropolitan dynamics, both for individuals and families as well as in the logic of spatial production. This study investigates the determinants of residential mobility aspirations based on primary data from 451 households in expansion areas of the Metropolitan Region of Greater Vitória, in Espírito Santo, Brazil. The results reveal that, while residential mobility aspirations among individuals in situations of high vulnerability are constrained by structural barriers, for those in low vulnerability they emerge as a concrete possibility—generally pursued to improve living conditions through relocation to more favorable contexts. Aspirations highlight the demands of different social groups and allow for a better understanding of interests shaped by urban inequalities.
