Indigenous self-recognition in urban contexts in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to reflect on the situation of indigenous peoples in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as to understand the territoriality that they currently assume and to problematize some processes of resistance, struggle and recognition. To this end, a historical review of the State's actions in relation to these groups is carried out. Then, the available public data linked to the population that self-identifies as indigenous or descended from indigenous people and the records of indigenous communities in the country are recovered and cartographically analyzed. Finally, their urban condition is analyzed as one of the most significant particularities of the current situation. Within the scope of understanding current ways of life, some reflections are shared on the production and reproduction of space in cities, and on the possibility of existing in these contexts, where the multiple devices executed by those who command spatial logics create a form of organization and highlight disputes over the construction of the city and the meaning that the city produced acquires.
