Mapeamento da vulnerabilidade social em Montes Claros-MG: A importância da avaliação social no contexto dos desastres naturais

Exposure to environmental risks places the population in conditions of vulnerability to the effects of catastrophic events, involving a combination of factors that can either amplify or mitigate the impact of these risks. Vulnerability is a fundamental concept for understanding how exposure to risks can transform into disasters and is a subject of discussion across various academic disciplines. This study examines social vulnerability in the city of Montes Claros - MG, highlighting the importance of assessing the degree of social vulnerability to enhance the effectiveness of disaster response plans and policies. Using data from the Demographic Census, six variables were selected to form the statistical basis for determining the degree of social vulnerability. These data are crucial for strategic decision-making by the state and society, indicating that sectors with high vulnerability require prioritized attention in contingency planning and risk mitigation. Mapping social vulnerability is an essential tool for analyzing social structure and identifying intra-urban disparities.
