Space and materiality: lessons from Marx

Abstract

The aim of this article is to contribute to a philosophical critique of the relationship or opposition between materiality and immateriality, a current issue in geographical studies. Thus, we draw on Marx's own foundation to critique the relational approaches to materiality and immateriality, and to objectivity and subjectivity, fundamental to revealing the content of the social relations of production and reproduction of human existence. The research presentation was established in three stages. First, an explanation of matter and dialectical materiality was developed. Next, we reflected on the need to unmask things and identify the real movement in objects. Finally, we emphasized the presence of subjectivity in materiality, in a relational manner, but with the quality of not being based on what does not exist, on what is not real, but rather giving reverberation to what is present and in movement in the production of the lives of real people.

Pedro Paulo de Lavor, Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA)

Doutor em Geografia, pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geografia da Universidade Federal de Sergipe (PPGEO/UFS), na linha de pesquisa em Dinâmicas Territoriais e Desenvolvimento. Técnico-Administrativo em Educação pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA). Tem realizado estudos e pesquisas nas áreas de Geografia Humana e Filosofia, com ênfase em Geografia Política e Teoria e Método da Geografia.

Ana Rocha dos Santos, Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS)

Licenciada (1990), bacharel (1994), mestre (1999) e doutora (2008) em Geografia pela Universidade Federal de Sergipe, instituição na qual é professora do Campus Prof. Alberto Carvalho e coordenadora do Programa de Pós-graduação em Geografia (PPGEO). Líder do Grupo de Pesquisa em Estudos Urbano-regionais, Política e Educação - GRUPE. Tem experiência na área de Geografia, com ênfase em Análise Regional, Geografia Política e Ensino de Geografia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Estado, descentralização, política pública, gestão do território, política educacional, formação de professores, prática docente, metodologia de ensino.
