This study aimed to correlate the values of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with rainfall in the mangrove of the Cananéia-Iguape Coastal System (CICS), in the state of São Paulo. For the development of this research, rainfall data were used, obtained from the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) sensor, and NDVI data, from the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS/Aqua) for the period from January 1, 2003 to December 31, 2022. Data processing and image acquisition were carried out on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Monthly and yearly rainfall data were obtained by summing daily a monthly value, and NDVI data were obtained by calculating respective averages. The temporal delimitation of these data corresponds to the boundary of the CICS. The main results indicated that the mangrove NDVI varied between 0.5 and 0.8, indicating dense vegetation and high photosynthetic activity. Pearson correlation coefficients (r) and cross-correlation coefficients between variables considering zero time and lags showed that the influence of rainfall versus NDVI is not immediate and therefore occurs four months after its occurrence, with r = 0.44. Furthermore, mangrove NDVI does not vary is not solely due to rainfall, as there are other factors influencing NDVI variation that need further investigation.
