Os Eyviguayegui-Mbayá-Guaicuru: o Tratado de Paz de 1791

Abstract

O objetivo do artigo é mostrar as principais intenções do Governo Colonial português de tornar os indígenas Eyiguayegui-Mbayá-Guaicuru – que se localizavam na Capitania de Mato Grosso – em uma barreira fronteiriça física, objetivando evitar uma possível invasão espanhola àquela região. O Tratado de Paz elaborado em 1791 entre o Governo Colonial português e os indígenas é a fonte histórica analisada no sentido de tecer as reflexões nessa direção. O conteúdo do Tratado mostra que seu teor interessava aos dois lados, tanto aos índios quanto aos portugueses, pois havia a perda da hegemonia local e a aliança vinha no sentido de restabelecer algumas posições. No entanto, uma questão interessante desse episódio é que os indígenas não tinham como saber realmente o teor dessa aliança que ao passar do tempo se mostrou maléfica ao grupo, ocasionando seu declínio demográfico no século XIX.
