Abstract

This paper examines the process of Christianization in 9th-century Scandinavia through the Vita Anskarii, hagiography of Ansgar written by Rimbert. The study aims to analyze and detail the hagiographer’s understanding of “Christianization”. For this purpose, the methodology of Vorstellungsgeschichte (Hans-Werner Goetz) was employed to explore the author’s conceptualizations and constructions of the past and his own context. The analysis reveals that Rimbert perceived and signified Christianization as a continuous process that extended beyond baptism, requiring constancy in Christian practice, missionary pedagogy, and also autonomy of the converts. The study also highlights that the opposition between Christianity and paganism is constructed in terms of religious and moral otherness, grounded in value judgments and shaped by the hagiographic narrative. Finally, the analysis demonstrates that the Vita Anskarii also reflects the uncertainties of a period marked by political instability, both in the Christian continent and in Scandinavia, emphasizing the "partial successes" of the missions and the need for their continuity.
