Abstract

Este artigo, pautando-se nos pressupostos metodológicos do contextualismo linguístico britânico, analisa a concepção e função da História para o político e intelectual mineiro Diogo de Vasconcellos. Dois momentos serão levados em consideração: o primeiro sobre a construção e recepção da narrativa histórica nas obras, História Antiga e Média de Minas Gerais através de um debate historiográfico acerca dos dois livros; o segundo é sobre o caráter retórico na construção de um argumento que valide o uso da História para a inserção do Estado de Minas Gerais no topo da civilização ocidental, nos primeiros anos do regime republicano brasileiro.
