Abstract

This article explores the political discourse of the Semanario de Avisos y Conocimientos Útiles. The Semanario, roughly translated as the Government’s Weekly Magazine dedicated to publishing adds and basic undertandings of practical matters for daily use, was the government’s official newspaper between 1853 and 1868. As such the Semanario not only defended the government’s position but also movilized Paraguayan citizens during the Triple Alliance War. This war pitted Paraguay against its neighbors Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay between 1864 and 1870. The article centers on the years between March of 1865 when the Paraguayan Congress made the Declaration of War and 1868 when the Semanario published its last number. In addition to exploring the official political discourse of the government, this article also studies the political discourses of citizens that wrote op-ed pieces published in the weekly magazine. These written pieces provide evidence to test the success of the national government promoting its political positions regarding the war. The article centers on critical political concepts such as nation; citizenship; republic; freedom; among others widely used at the time.
