Abstract

This article analyzes the epistolary communication between the family of the patient and the mental hospital, through the reading of the letters sent by the relatives, which are attached to the medical record and the reading of the answers provided by the mental hospital, during the period from 1899 to 1930. The preliminary reflections done allow us to investigate about how was established this communication, what was the family’s view about the mental hospital - considering it was a judiciary institution - and how often the family was informed about the patient's condition. This article is part of project “Organization of collection medical record of Manicômio Judiciário de São Paulo”, started in 2013 by group PET História, in partnership with Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo (APESP).
