Entre os anos 1860 e 1880 surgiram publicações e ocorreram debates em defesa da restrição à participação eleitoral sob a justificativa da necessidade de aperfeiçoamento do sistema representativo. Neste artigo pretendo reconstituir as falas favoráveis e contrárias à seleção do eleitorado e que culminaram na Lei Saraiva em 1881, cuja proibição do direito de voto para o analfabeto foi responsável pela redução do eleitorado para 1% da população brasileira.Downloads
