Abstract

Este artigo apresenta algumas considerações sobre as transformações (simbólicas) do samba em meio ao processo de modernização da música popular brasileira da década de 1930. Partimos do pressuposto de que as polêmicas travadas entre sambistas no Rio de Janeiro das primeiras décadas do século XX, mais do que indicar as várias transformações técnico-musicais pelas quais o samba passava, inseriam-se no processo de estruturação de um mercado musical, onde o sambista, cada vez mais, tornava-se um “profissional do samba”, ao mesmo tempo em que criava a moderna música popular brasileira. Esse período, a década de 1930, foi o tempo de atuação de Noel Rosa como compositor de sambas, e tendo sido a sua participação marcante em todo o processo, o Poeta da Vila nos serviu como uma referência analítica.
