O cristianismo na América portuguesa e seu papel mediador na utilização do mundo natural: o caso da cauinagem

Abstract

Historicamente, os usos culturais do meio natural foram mediados por instituições que circunscreveram suas possibilidades de utilização. Com a ascensão do cristianismo, seu ideal ascético tornou-se hegemônico no âmbito do ocidente e acompanhou a religião Cristã em sua expansão pelo Novo Mundo, onde interferiu significativamente na relação dos europeus com os povos locais e a natureza americana. Este artigo se detém no papel desempenhado pelos aparatos simbólicos do cristianismo em sua relação com a diversidade cultural americana e suas utilizações culturais do mundo natural, particularmente o ritual da cauinagem.
